June 2010 Feis Results

Well done to all my dancers, young and old-er (!), who took part in the Irish-dancing display at our ‘Cheese & Wine’ reception in the Woodcross Bar, Cratloe on 20th May 2010. A great evening was had by all and ‘Aggie’ was well impressed with the dancing! Aggie is an assistance dog provided by Irish Dogs for the Disabled for a local boy, Jack, who lives in Bunratty. The difference Aggie has made to Jack’s life is priceless (see http://www.dogsfordisabled.ie/jackaggie.htm) – we are aiming to enable another child or adult with physical disabilities to benefit from having an assistance dog through our Feis.

Here is the cutout from the newspaper

Our Feis, Féile Rince Luimní, in aid of Irish Dogs for the Disabled takes place on 18th & 19th September 2010 in Carlton Castletroy Park Hotel, Limerick. Please put the dates in your diary as I expect everyone who is given an entry slip for this Feis to participate! Check for updates on the Feis during the summer on www.mckennadance.com

‘BLAS’ SCHOLARSHIP 2010

The winner of the ‘Blas’ Scholarship 2010 is Michelle Delaney, one of our Senior dancers. The Scholarship covers Michelle’s fees for the Blas International Summer School of Irish Traditional Music & Dance at the Irish World Academy at the University of Limerick from 21st June 2010 to 2nd July 2010 inclusive. This is the 3rd year of the McKenna School of Irish Dancing ‘Blas’ Scholarship and is worth in the region of €700 – so if you are 16 or older next year, watch out for details of how to apply!

ADDITIONAL ATTENDANCE AT CLASSES

For all children aged 7 or over (born 2001 or earlier) AND who have completed a minimum of 1 full year at the McKenna School:

  1. Attendance at solo dancing classes at least twice a week (discount available):

Regardless of whether or not students compete in Open Feiseanna (competitions against pupils from other schools), a second class:

  • Significantly aids retention of steps;
  • Enhances mastery of the basics of Irish-dancing;
  • Improves the overall standard of a student’s Irish-dancing, and
  • Allows your child(ren) to progress more quickly.
  1. Attendance at the separate specialised team dancing classes (discount available):

Building on the performance element of the School, these classes will cover ceili and figure dances ONLY. PLEASE NOTE THAT:

  • In future, participants for upcoming displays, exhibitions and trips away will normally be drawn from those who attend these classes on a regular basis – a ‘3 strikes and you’re out’ rule will normally apply;
  • A limited number of team dances will still form an integral part of solo dancing classes as I believe it is important for students to understand they are part of the overall ‘McKenna Team’. However, these team dances will generally only be performed at Class Feiseanna;
  • Students in the team dancing classes are also required to attend at least 1 solo dancing class per week;

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • Where possible, all future class news will be sent by email;
  • If you did not complete a registration form last year, or if any (or all) of your contact details have changed, or if you have not supplied an email address, please let me know;
  • Please also ensure you check the notice boards in both halls for news updates;
  • PLEASE CONTACT A MEMBER OF THE PARENTS COMMITTEE WHO WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE AT MOST CLASSES FOR ALL QUERIES, CLOTHES/SHOES ORDERS, FUND-RAISING MATTERS ETC.
